Bananas may disappear on Earth, experts warned. Plants suffer from a highly infectious soil fungus, according to “Moscow 24”.
This disease has been known since the twentieth century. It began to spread actively in Asia and Africa, and in 2019 it was first discovered in South America. This region is the main supplier of bananas in the world.
According to experts, in Colombia and Honduras, plantations affected by Tropical Race 4 (this is the name of the disease) have already begun to close. The pathogen is not susceptible to chemicals, so it will take at least 30-40 years to restore the soil.
It is noted that the Cavendish variety, which accounts for 95% of all world trade, suffers mainly from the fungus. Previously, scientists warned that due to global warming, people may be left without rolls and sushi. Climatic changes negatively affect the nori algae necessary for their preparation.
