Professor Wang Linfa of the American-Singapore Medical University Duke-NUS warned of the possibility of a new pandemic due to the mutation of the coronavirus, writes The Straits Times.
According to him, this can happen with a phenomenon such as zoonosis, when the coronavirus begins to spread from humans back to bats. This can happen if, for example, a person leaves an unfinished fruit that is then picked up by a bat.
“Bats have a unique immune system as they can maintain the virus without developing disease. However, the virus can still mutate and be transmitted to animals X, Y, or Z. So when this mutated virus goes to animals X, Y, Z and gets to humans and then we get our disease X, Y, Z or Sars-CoV-3, ”said Professor Wang.
Every time a virus jumps between species, he says, it is forced to make major changes, because genetically it must adapt to a new host.
“When we have more jumps or spears to other species, the virus will change more. One of these new viruses may become Sars-Cov-3, ”the expert added.
