The woman who received the world's first face transplant: the tragic story of Isabelle Dinoire

In 2005, she lost her lips, chin and most of her nose.

A woman who received the world's first face transplant has tragically suffered the consequences of her revolutionary operation.

Ladbible.com writes about this.

Isabelle Dinoire from France suffered horrific injuries when her beloved pet Labrador tore up most of her lower face in 2005.

The incident occurred after Isabelle overdosed on pills in a suicide attempt. The dog apparently found her unconscious and chewed on her face in a desperate attempt to wake her up. When the mother of two woke up, she couldn't believe what she saw in the mirror. She lost her lips, chin and most of her nose.

“I couldn't even imagine that it was my face, or my blood, or that the dog chewed my face,” she told the BBC in 2012.

Isabelle was rushed to hospital, but doctors said her injuries were too severe and complex to be treated with standard facial reconstruction techniques. The only option was a full face transplant, but this procedure had never been done before due to difficulties connecting the nose and mouth. Despite everything, the operation went well.

“From the moment I first saw myself in the mirror after surgery, I knew it was a victory. Because of all the bandages, it didn't look very good, but I had a nose, I had a mouth – it was fantastic,” Isabelle said in BBC interview. “I could see in the nurses’ eyes that it was luck.”

However, her suffering was far from over. Immediately after the revolutionary operation, she began to be harassed by the media and people she met on the street. She continued: “It was painful. I live in a small town, so everyone knew my story. It wasn't easy at first. The kids laughed at me and everyone said, 'Look, it's her, it's her.'

She said it made her feel like a “circus animal.”

On top of that, Isabelle's body began to reject her new face, causing her to lose “part of her lips” in 2015. She also had to take immunosuppressants daily to prevent facial disintegration, which ultimately weakened her immune system.

She died of cancer in 2016 at the age of 49.

Despite the challenges she faced, Isabelle's surgery was a groundbreaking moment for face transplantation and paved the way for other patients. In 2020, Joe DiMeo received the world's first face and double arm transplant after surviving a horrific car accident that left him with third-degree burns over 80 percent of his body.

After the world's first successful operation, Joe can live his life again. He documents his transplant journey on TikTok, where he has 137,000 followers.
