The World Health Organization (WHO) warned of the risks of reducing quarantine in contact with people infected with coronavirus. This was stated by WHO expert Maria van Kerkhove, her words are quoted by TASS.
Reducing the duration of quarantine from 14 to ten or seven days for those in contact with carriers of the coronavirus increases the risk of transmission, she said. Kerkhove also explained that some states are taking such a step for economic and social reasons.
“A number of countries decided to reduce quarantine to ten or even seven days, and some also introduced testing on the tenth or seventh day. However, if you reduce the quarantine from 14 to ten days, you will lose about 13 percent of cases in which symptoms will develop after this period, she warned.
WHO recommends a 14-day quarantine for anyone who has been in contact with sick people. The expert recalled that the position of the organization is based on the length of the incubation period, which ranges from approximately one to 14 days. However, most people develop symptoms 5-6 days after infection, but there is a possibility of symptoms developing after a 14-day period.
Earlier, the WHO warned Russians about the dire situation with the coronavirus. WHO Representative in Russia Melita Vuinovich said that the situation with coronavirus in the world is at a critical stage and will be difficult in the next few months.
