The head of the World Health Organization (WHO), Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, said that the omicron strain of the coronavirus and the delta variant could trigger a new wave of disease in the world. He announced this during a briefing that was broadcast on Twitter.

“This could lead to a tsunami of cases, which could significantly increase the pressure on health systems around the world,” he stressed. Gebreyesus paid special attention to the strong infectiousness of the omicron strain.

According to the head of WHO, it is necessary to eliminate inequalities in health care in order to defeat the coronavirus pandemic. He noted that otherwise the possibility of the emergence of new variants of the virus that can bypass anti-epidemic measures will remain.

Earlier it was reported that an international team of scientists has identified antibodies that neutralize the omicron variant and other strains of the coronavirus. These antibodies target those regions of the S-protein that remain practically unchanged during the evolution of the virus.
