The World Health Organization (WHO) has assessed the ability of COVID-19 to become a seasonal infection. Melita Vuinovich, WHO representative in Russia, stated this in an interview with Rossiyskaya Gazeta.
According to Vujnovic, for an unambiguous answer to the question of whether there are prerequisites for COVID-19 to become a seasonal disease, several seasons must be observed.
She clarified that it is necessary to find out how long vaccines provide immunity and how effective vaccination programs are in achieving high immunity. “Even having a highly effective vaccine does not guarantee that we will be able to completely eradicate or eradicate the virus. The likely scenario in the context of an effective global vaccination program is that in the future the virus will become an endemic virus with a low threat level, ”explained Vujnovic.
Vujnovic also said that there is still no consensus in the WHO on how the situation with the incidence of COVID-19 will develop in 2021. There is a possibility that the pandemic will subside thanks to vaccinations, she said.
Earlier it was reported that the World Health Organization (WHO) does not see the need to demand proof of coronavirus vaccination from arriving travelers. The organization said that this recommendation is due to the fact that it is not yet known how much vaccines affect the transmission of the virus from one person to another.
