The White House spoke about the ability of Russia and the United States to interact for the benefit of their peoples. US Assistant to the President for National Security Robert O'Brien said this following a meeting in Geneva with the Secretary of the Russian Security Council Nikolai Patrushev. His statement was posted on Twitter of the US Security Council.
“We had a business and constructive dialogue. And while we are at odds, I am optimistic about the prospects that the US and Russia can make progress in key areas that will ultimately benefit the American and Russian peoples, ”O'Brien said.
According to him, the parties discussed previously agreed issues, including arms control, cyber security and non-interference in elections. Patrushev and O'Brien also discussed the conflict between Azerbaijan and Armenia, Syria, Afghanistan and other “issues of mutual interest.”
O'Brien noted during the meeting that the United States will not tolerate “foreign interference in elections.” In response, the Russian side pledged not to do so.
Previously, Russia was repeatedly accused of interfering in US affairs. So, in April 2019, the American special prosecutor Robert Mueller published a report on Russia's interference in the 2016 presidential election, which was won by Donald Trump. It says that Moscow did interfere in the American electoral process, but suspicions about the connection between the Russian side and Trump could not be confirmed.
