The West saw an “open door” for the revival of the Treaty on the Elimination of Intermediate-Range and Shorter-Range Missiles (INF) and mutual restrictions on nuclear weapons in the responses of the United States and NATO to Russia’s proposals on security guarantees. This is reported by the New York Times.

“The documents also make it clear that Russia does not have the right to veto the presence of nuclear weapons, troops or conventional weapons in NATO countries. But they open the door for mutual restrictions on medium- and short-range nuclear weapons, including the revival of the INF Treaty,” the newspaper writes.

It is noted that the United States and the North Atlantic Alliance have expressed their readiness to discuss the rules and scope of military exercises, as well as to limit their conduct to places strangled from the borders so that they cannot be confused with armies ready to invade the territory of another state.

Earlier, on January 12, NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg accused Russia of allegedly violating the Treaty on the Elimination of Intermediate-Range and Shorter-Range Missiles (INF). At the same time, the head of the alliance stressed that the association is ready to sign a new similar document.

The INF Treaty was officially terminated on August 2, 2020. The United States broke the 1987 agreement allegedly because of violations of its terms by the Russian side. Moscow denies the accusations.
