The auction took place on April 27 in the British city of Divisis.

In the UK, the gold pocket watch of the richest man was sold at auction for ” Titanic”. A private American collector from the United States paid a record 1.175 million pounds sterling (about one and a half million dollars) for it.

Bloomberg writes about this.

The first owner of the watch, 47-year-old businessman John Jacob Astor, drowned with the ship in 1912.

Astor's body was recovered from the Atlantic Ocean seven days after the tragedy. Found with him was his exquisite 14k gold Waltham pocket watch engraved JJA.

Astor is known as the richest passenger aboard the Titanic and was considered one of the richest in the world at the time. His net worth was approximately US$87 million, equivalent to several billion dollars today.

Recall that the previous largest sum for Titanic artifacts was 1.1 million pounds sterling for the violin that was played while the ship sank. It was sold in 2013. The violin case was sold at the same auction as the Henry Aldridge & Son for 360 thousand pounds.

The Titanic was sailing from Southampton (England) to New York when it struck an iceberg while crossing the Atlantic on April 14, 1912. It is estimated that 1,500 people died in the icy waters.
