Despite the destruction of the top of the Wagner PMC, Prigozhin’s private army continues to exist autonomously and carry out tasks in Africa.
In Syria, a skirmish occurred between mercenaries of the Wagner PMC and troops of the Russian Ministry of Defense, which almost escalated into full-scale hostilities.
Journalist and blogger Denis Kazansky reported this in his Telegram channel.
The journalist writes that former deputy of the Odessa City Council Igor Dimitriev, who defected to the Russian side in 2014 and worked in Syria in the interests of the Kremlin, published details of what happened in his telegram.
The essence of the conflict
“The bottom line is this: Wagner, after being banned from flying because of the Khmeimim airbase and the cancellation of permits from the Russian Foreign Ministry, which agreed with the Syrian Ministry of Defense and issued flights for rotation to Africa, because of the Syrian T4 airbase. As the plane approached, Russian helicopters were raised into the air, and fire trucks were driven onto the runway to prevent it from landing,” the former deputy said in a statement.
The Syrians were told that if this plane lands, fire will be opened on it. Moreover, the Syrian soldiers, who had their own order to accept the plane, for some time resisted the actions of the Russian Ministry of Defense on the runway itself, but when they saw the hovering helicopters, they considered it best to retreat,” writes Dimitriev.
“Since the circling plane (a cargo plane from Libya) was running out of fuel, the question arose, since it might not make it back to Libya. The “Wagnerites” who were preparing for the meeting contacted Libya and, according to rumors, they said that if this plane was shot down, the “Wagnerites” in Libya themselves would respond by striking the base of the Russian Ministry of Defense,” the ex-deputy’s message says.
“But at the last moment the leadership of the Syrian “Wagnerites” got through to Yevkurov and the order was canceled, the plane landed. The funny thing about this (if there can be anything funny here at all) was that there were 170 Syrians on board, contractors Wagner, who were flying home after a contract in Libya. The Syrians told me about this excitedly, with their eyes wide open, waving their arms and asking, “What is going on there?” Dimitriev summed up.
Continuation of activities in Africa
Despite the destruction of the top of the Wagner PMC, Prigozhin's private army continues to exist autonomously and carry out tasks in Africa, writes Denis Kazansky.
< p>And its relations with the official Russian army remain strained. And if this time a direct clash was avoided, then in the future it may still lead to direct hostilities,” he noted.
