A revaccination against coronavirus may be required every year, and possibly every two years in the future. This recommended frequency of re-vaccination was named by Ian Jones, professor of virology at the British University of Reading, in an interview with Lenta.ru.
Jones noted that recent evidence suggests that immunity from available vaccines lasts longer than originally thought. The expert noted that if the coronavirus is driven out of the human population or weakened, then re-vaccination may be required much less often.
At the same time, the specialist emphasized that the primary task should remain to increase the rate of vaccination of those people who have not yet been vaccinated. “Revaccination can increase immunity in those who have already been vaccinated, but it will not solve the problem of achieving herd immunity in the population,” Jones said.
Although the delta variant of the coronavirus, first discovered in India, manages to “bypass” antibodies. Observations show that even in the regions where this strain circulates, vaccination avoids a severe course of the disease and hospitalization.
Earlier, one of the heads of the British National Health System (HNS) Chris Hopson said that people are likely to need to be re-vaccinated against COVID-19 over the next five to ten years. He also called on the British government to prepare a revaccination program as soon as possible so that people can get all the vaccinations in time. In particular, he recalled that influenza vaccination will start in September in the UK: if doctors put one dose in each hand, they need to know as much as possible about the government's program right now.
The revaccination program will also take place in Russia. On June 21, Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said that re-vaccination of Russian residents was inevitable. According to him, this is important for everyone who wants to “protect themselves, protect their relatives and friends, and for those who are obliged to protect all those around him.”
