by alex

The Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine adopted the bill “On the All-Ukrainian Referendum” introduced by President Volodymyr Zelensky, reports “Strana.ua”.

The document creates a mechanism for holding referendums and determines the topics of issues that can be submitted to them. For example, these cannot be questions of taxes, budget and amnesty. Through a referendum, it will be possible to abolish already adopted laws, as well as initiate new ones.

The law stipulates how citizens can initiate voting, and also states that the results of referendums become binding on the authorities.

According to the law, it will be possible to submit to a referendum the issue of changing the territory of Ukraine, and not only increasing it. This gave rise to speculations that the government will hold a referendum on the fate of Crimea and Donbass. Rada Speaker Dmitry Razumkov has officially denied such plans.
