The US National Nuclear Safety Administration has announced the production of the first modernized thermonuclear warhead, the W88. It is intended for use on UGM-133A Trident II (D5) ballistic missiles. They are carried by nuclear submarines.
According to Lenta.ru, the new warhead is called the W88 Alteration 370 (Alt 370). It has an updated charge initiation system and a lightning rod connector.
The technical characteristics of the new warhead are classified. It is known that it took 11 years to develop. In general, the US allocated $ 2.3 billion for the warhead modernization program.
The journalists also clarified that flight tests of the American promising intercontinental ballistic missile GBSD should take place in 2023. It will replace the LGM-30G Minuteman III, which has been in service since 1970.
