China actively intervened in the US presidential elections, which were held in November 2020. This opinion was expressed in his report by the director of US National Intelligence John Ratcliffe. The document was published by The Washington Post.
As Ratcliffe noted, the conclusions drawn by experts from the US intelligence community, who analyzed Beijing's influence on the American presidential elections, do not look objective enough and were largely politicized. According to the director of national intelligence, the CIA leadership deliberately downplayed the level of China's influence on the US electoral process in its documents, putting pressure on analysts.
Ratcliffe explained that analysts dealing with Chinese and Russian interference in American elections have used different terminology in their work. As a result, the impression could be created that Moscow made active attempts to influence the electoral process in the United States, while Beijing did not. In reality, the director of national intelligence stressed, there is every reason to assert that China also interfered in the US elections.
Earlier in January, the director of the US National Center for Counterintelligence and Security, William Evanina, said that Russia, Iran, and China were trying to influence the US elections in 2020. At the same time, he noted that he himself was not personally a witness, victim or participant in any attempts to interfere.
Ratcliffe said last December that Russia could not compete with China in terms of a threat to US security. He noted that he does not want to downplay Moscow's danger to Washington, but considers Beijing to be a much stronger adversary.
