Washington sees import substitution and preferences for goods and services of domestic production as a departure from the norms of the World Trade Organization (WTO), and therefore decided to work on countermeasures through the WTO and prevent Moscow from developing this direction. This was stated by US Trade Representative Catherine Tai, RIA Novosti reports.
“This report paints a picture of Russia's continuing departure from the founding principles of the World Trade Organization, such as non-discriminatory practices, more open trade, predictability, transparency and fair competition,” said Tai.
She added that the violation of the rules and regulations of the WTO, obligations to the organization puts the workers and entrepreneurs of the United States in economically less favorable conditions and makes it impossible for fair competition.
Tai also said the sales representative's office will continue to work with like-minded partners and use WTO tools to hold Russia accountable for its behavior in the multilateral trading system.
Earlier in December, Russian President Vladimir Putin announced that almost all import substitution tasks had been resolved in the country. The Russian leader also added that innovation is one of the most important areas of import substitution.
