The new German Chancellor Olaf Scholz does not intend to further block the Nord Stream 2 gas pipeline. This is stated in an article by The New York Times (NYT).
According to the author of the article, Melissa Eddy, Scholz, unexpectedly for Western partners, took the same position regarding the Russian gas pipeline as his predecessor, Angela Merkel, who supported the project, considering it extremely important for the development of Germany's industrial base.
At the same time, the article notes that there is still no consensus on the issue of certification of Nord Stream 2 in the German government.
“Things are not easy in the Scholz government either. Green leaders make statements in support of European and American demands that Germany use the pipeline as an instrument of pressure on Russian President Vladimir Putin, ”the article says.
The author of the material recalls that Germany's European partners fear that the launch of the Russian pipeline will deprive Ukraine and other countries with gas transmission systems of payments for energy transit. The United States, in turn, believes that Nord Stream 2 threatens the security of Europe and provides Russia with an opportunity to exert pressure on the region. Washington continues to actively obstruct the implementation of the project.
Earlier, Bundestag deputy from the Alternative for Germany party Stefan Kotrets noted that the contradictions between the positions of German Chancellor Olaf Scholz and Foreign Minister Annalena Berbock regarding the Nord Stream 2 gas pipeline indicate a crisis within the German government. In his opinion, Nord Stream 2 was blown up from a private commercial process into a geopolitical problem solely for ideological reasons.
