The US administration has decided to restore previously canceled exemptions from sanctions on Iran’s nuclear program. However, Washington does not consider this measure a concession to Tehran, RIA Novosti reports, citing a State Department official.

The representative of the State Department announced the restoration of exemptions from sanctions under the nuclear deal to allow third parties to “participate in nuclear nonproliferation and security projects in Iran.” The official noted that the decision was made against the background of growing concerns due to the increasing stocks of enriched uranium in the country.

The diplomat added that the United States is introducing exceptions to allow a number of international partners to hold “more detailed technical discussions.” In addition, Washington seeks to ensure cooperation that meets its interests in the field of nuclear nonproliferation. “For clarity: This is not a concession to Iran,” the State Department official said.

At the same time, the decision to restore exceptions does not mean that the parties will soon return to the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA). “This step is not a signal that we are about to reach an understanding on a mutual return to the full implementation of the JCPOA on the Iranian nuclear program,” the foreign ministry stressed.
