Russians tried to steal confidential information from American officials using a phishing scheme.
An attempt by Russian intelligence agents to hack government agencies, including the State Department and the Pentagon, was thwarted in the United States. To do this, 41 Internet domains were removed that they and their proxies were using.
This was reported on Thursday, October 3, by Reuters, citing the US Department of Justice.
The report specified that the seized domains were used by hackers associated with a unit of the Federal Security Service (FSB) of the Russian Federation.
“The Russian government launched this scheme to steal sensitive information from Americans, using purportedly legitimate email accounts to trick victims into revealing credentials,” said Deputy Attorney General Lisa Monaco.
The hackers used these domains for a phishing scheme aimed at gaining access to information from American companies, former members of the U.S. intelligence community, former and current employees of the Department of Defense and the State Department, U.S. military contractors, and Department of Energy personnel.
The seized domains were used by hackers belonging to Callisto Group and its partners (specifically, Cold River and Star Blizzard), which the Justice Department calls units of the FSB.
Recall that hackers associated with the Kremlin previously attempted to attack the email of the former U.S. ambassador to Ukraine.
