The US has announced a new deadline for considering a plan to help Ukraine – CNN

~6 0~p>Efforts to provide additional aid to Ukraine have been delayed for months due to internal Republican Party disputes.

Speaker of the House of Representatives US Mike Johnson rejected a bipartisan Ukraine aid package from the Senate, but gives Ukraine supporters the opportunity to develop a new alternative military aid bill.

CNN writes about this.

According to the publication, Johnson held private meetings with House Republicans trying to win support for a new bipartisan foreign aid package, including restrictions on the US border with Mexico.

And now House Foreign Affairs Committee Chairman Michael McCaul is taking the lead in trying to finalize the proposal and build consensus to get action on the floor before the end of March or April.

Johnson has not yet taken a position on the bill or committed to bringing it to a vote. But Ukraine supporters in the Republican Party believe Johnson will allow the bill to come to a vote—even if he risks backlash.

Johnson faced pressure from all sides. He has faced criticism internationally and from Democrats who say his failure to act immediately signals support for Putin.

At the same time, far-right Republicans explicitly warned him not to approve a penny more funding for Ukraine.

Passing legislation through the House remains an extremely difficult task, according to CNN. Republicans are deeply divided on Ukraine, and former President Donald Trump could effectively kill the bill with a single social media post.

Note that the new plan, being developed by a bipartisan group of members of Congress, provides for the provision of military support to Ukraine, Israel and Taiwan in the amount of $66 billion, excluding humanitarian assistance.

Recall that US President Joe Biden signed a temporary budget to prevent a shutdown. But the law on providing support to Ukraine was never adopted.
