Over the past few years, space has evolved into a realm of warfare, as have air, land and sea, Air Force Commander General John Raymond told The Washington Post.
“China, which is our constant threat, and Russia have developed weapons that can either disable our satellites or destroy them from the ground, from space or in cyberspace,” he says.
According to Raymond, the United States should not get involved in a conflict that starts in space or spreads to it. “Our goal is to prevent this, and for this, in my opinion, it is necessary to act from a position of strength, changing the methods of deterring competitors and adversaries. We want this area to be safe for everyone, ”said the general.
In March, Raymond said that Moscow and Beijing's space capabilities were a concern for Washington. The general also spoke about one of the Russian satellites, created “to destroy American satellites in low-earth orbit.” Press Secretary of the Russian President Dmitry Peskov called the general's fears groundless, noting that Moscow appreciates cooperation with the United States in this area.
In April 2020, the US Air Force Space Command accused Russia of testing an anti-satellite missile. The statement said that the weapon is capable of destroying satellites that are in low earth orbit (altitude above the planet's surface 160-2000 km). At the time, Raymond said that in connection with Russia's testing of direct intercept missiles, the threats to the United States and its allies are “real, serious and growing.”
