The House of Representatives of the US Congress approved a bill to endow the capital of the state with state status. This was reported by the press service of the lower house of the legislative body.
According to the US department, 216 congressmen voted for this initiative, another 208 – against. If the bill is passed by the Senate and passes the procedure for approval by the President of the country, then the American capital, Washington, will become the 51st state of the United States.
Thus, in the United States there will be the state of Washington, aka the Douglas Commonwealth, the name of which is proposed to be given in honor of the fighter for the rights of blacks and the leader of the movement for the abolition of slavery, Frederick Douglas (1818-1895).
But. as noted by TASS, the US Congress is not the first time considering such an initiative on the status of the American capital. At the same time, despite the support of the idea from the House of Representatives of the US Congress, the decision to make Washington a state has not yet been made.
