The US Congress passed a bill to avoid a government shutdown: details

by alex

The legislative initiative was supported by 65 senators.

The upper house of the US Congress passed a bill to temporarily continue funding the country's federal institutions and avoid a government shutdown after February 18.

Ukrinform writes about this.

With 65 senators in favor of the bill and 27 against, it now allows the bill to be sent to White House chief Joe Biden for signature.

Thus, the US government will be able to function and receive budget funding until March 11 of this year, if lawmakers do not reach a final agreement on the country's budget for fiscal year 2022 before this date.

Recall that the US federal government is funded on the basis of a similar resolution adopted in early December last year. It allowed to extend the allocation of funds from the state budget until February 18.

Note that the US fiscal year ends on September 30th. If the next year's budget has not yet been approved, Congress passes appropriate legislative initiatives to continue funding federal agencies for a limited period in the amount of the previous state budget.

After the escalation of the struggle in Congress between Republicans and Democrats, shutdowns have ceased to be a rarity in recent years.

We add that a shutdown is a temporary partial stoppage of the work of state bodies.

In the history of the United States, a shutdown has occurred 17 times, the last time in 2018, the penultimate one in 2013, due to an untimely adopted budget. This is the same as the shutdown of the US government.

In February 2019 , then US President Donald Trump signed the government budget for 2019 and the fiscal year, which stopped the shutdown .
