US Senators Christopher Koons and Lindsay Graham are concerned about the possible introduction of Russian troops into Belarus. They believe this could jeopardize the position of Washington's NATO allies in Eastern Europe. Koons and Graham expressed this opinion in a letter to US President Donald Trump, reports RT.
“In the event of the introduction of Russian troops into the cities of Belarus, the country will lose the remnants of its sovereignty and efforts to promote democracy will stall for decades,” the publication quotes the senators. In addition, Koons and Graham said that after talks between Russian leader Vladimir Putin and Belarusian President Alexander Lukashenko, “Kremlin-controlled journalists have publicly called for” polite people “from Russia to be sent to Belarus.”
Commenting on the letter of the American senators, Vladimir Olenchenko, senior researcher at the Center for European Studies at the IMEMO RAN, said that such statements are a common thing in the political thinking of the United States. “Again we see that the Americans think in their own cliches … This is one of such cases. For some reason, they think that Russia is building its policy in the same way, ”he said.
On September 12, it was reported that Lukashenko was thinking about withdrawing additional troops from the western border, deployed there because of the threat of military aggression from NATO. He has repeatedly stated that the protests in Belarus are coordinated and paid for by Western countries in order to stage a color revolution.
