Mike Pompeo
US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo worried about calls to Cypriot ports by Russian ships bound for Syria. This is stated in a press release from the State Department, RIA Novosti reports.
According to Pompeo, he discussed this topic with the President of Cyprus Nikos Anastasiades. “I raised the issue of the United States' concerns about Russia's money-laundering activities and their regular calls at ports here,” he said.
According to him, everyone supposedly knows that Russian warships, stopping in Cypriot ports, are not performing humanitarian missions in Syria. “We have asked Cyprus and the president to take our concerns into account,” Pompeo said.
At the same time, the American military is in Syria without a legal basis. Damascus has repeatedly stated that the presence of the American contingent in Syria violates the sovereignty of the state and contradicts all international rules.
On August 31, Pompeo said that the United States had noticed an increase in Russian military activity in the Alaska region and other regions. He thus commented on the data on the appearance of a Russian submarine in international waters near Alaska. The vessel was monitored by the North American Joint Aerospace Defense Command (NORAD) and the United States Northern Command.
