It became known that the US Navy decided not to equip the F / A-18E / F Super Hornet carrier-based aircraft with conformal fuel tanks.
According to media reports, Boeing will not supply the military with upgraded F / A-18E / F Block III. By conformal fuel tanks, we mean additional tanks that fit tightly to the profile of the aircraft. Such tanks have less impact on the aerodynamic characteristics and radar signature of the fighter than the outboard versions.
Boeing was reportedly instructed to stop work on the new tanks in January 2021. The reasons for this, most likely, are the high cost, terms and unsatisfactory results of work. However, the exact reason for the US abandonment of conformal fuel tanks is unknown.
