George Kent
The United States and the European Union are going to jointly announce the imposition of sanctions against Belarus next week. This was stated by George Kent, Deputy Assistant Secretary of State for European and Eurasian Affairs, TASS reports.
“I am in active contact with my European colleagues, now they are the European Union and Great Britain, as well as the Canadian side. We strive to make a coordinated statement, ”the American diplomat said.
On September 17, the European Parliament supported the imposition of sanctions against President of Belarus Alexander Lukashenko and other persons responsible for falsifying the election results for the head of the republic and repression in the country. The final decision will be made by the Council of the European Union.
Prior to this, it was reported that the United States was considering additional sanctions against Belarus due to the arrest of a member of the Coordination Council of the opposition of Belarus Maria Kolesnikova. US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo then appealed to the Belarusian authorities with an appeal “to end violence against their own people, to release all those unjustly detained.”
In Belarus, for the second month, mass protests have continued over the official results of the presidential elections on August 9, according to which Lukashenko won 80 percent of the vote.
