The Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA) has begun development of a nuclear-powered spacecraft. It should be ready by 2025.
According to “N + 1”, the development of the apparatus is carried out within the framework of the DRACO program. A thermal nuclear rocket engine can provide thrust, as in chemical engines, and also has a higher velocity of the working fluid. Thanks to such engines, it will be possible to send more massive ships on flights to other planets and at the same time consume less fuel.
DARPA announced that the DRACO project is entering the engineering design phase. It will last 18 months. The new engine will have to run on low-enriched uranium fuel with a U-235 isotope content of five to 20%.
