Japan is expected to soon formalize policy changes that will allow it to export dozens of Patriot missiles to the United States, which in turn will be able to ship them to strengthen the air defense of Ukraine.

The Washington Post writes about this.

The publication emphasizes that the modification to the defense export rules does not directly mention the Patriot system, but responds to a request from the Biden administration as discussions continue. US officials said on condition of anonymity.

WP recalls that Japan produces missiles for Patriot, the main US air defense system, under license from Raytheon.

“President Biden raised this issue with Prime Minister Fumio Kishida at Camp David in August, during “during the historic trilateral summit with South Korea and again at the economic summit in San Francisco last month. Seoul has quietly promised to provide hundreds of thousands of artillery to Ukraine over the past year – more than all European countries combined,” the site says.

Officials say that South Korea has delivered a significant portion of what it promised. In Ukraine they don’t comment on this.

The authors of the article noted that Japan is concerned that the Russian invasion could push China to take similar actions against Taiwan . They recalled that it was the first East Asian country to join Western sanctions against Moscow.

Recall that during the final conference on December 19, Vladimir Zelensky announced strengthening of air defense.
