The United States proposed to impose sanctions against Russia because of Navalny

American senators from both parties have proposed imposing sanctions against Russian officials over the situation with the founder of the Anti-Corruption Foundation (FBK) Alexei Navalny, who is undergoing treatment in Berlin for intoxication. This is stated on the website of Senator Marco Rubio.

Senators presented a bill that suggests the possibility of imposing sanctions against Russian officials, since they may be related to violations of international law, including the Navalny case. The names and positions of persons against whom the sanctions may be applied are not specified.

They also suggested that the US administration submit to Congress a report on who may be related to the situation with the oppositionist. Legislators also expect to receive a report on the financial affairs of Russian President Vladimir Putin and his inner circle.

Earlier, US President Donald Trump refused to answer a journalist's question about the incident with Navalny. US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo said that Washington will definitely react to the situation with Navalny as soon as all the facts of what happened are known. A spokeswoman for the American leader stressed that the United States “condemned the confirmed poisoning in the most severe way” and that the use of chemical weapons is unacceptable under any circumstances.

Navalny became ill on August 20 during a flight from Tomsk to Moscow, the plane was landed in Omsk. There he fell into a coma, a few days later from the Omsk hospital he was transported to the Berlin clinic “Charite”. European toxicologists said that substances from the Novichok group were found in Navalny's body. His tracks were found on a bottle from under water, which his relatives took from the room of the Tomsk hotel. In September, Navalny was brought out of a coma and discharged from the Charite.
