US Secretary of State Anthony Blinken said that the United States is engaged in both containment and diplomacy towards Russia, these actions are going in parallel. He also promised a tough response to those steps of Moscow, which Washington considers aggressive, reports TASS.
Thus, the head of the State Department commented on reports of the allegedly planned Russian invasion of Ukraine and possible US actions. He stressed that American leader Joe Biden told his Russian counterpart Vladimir Putin during the Geneva summit that Washington is striving for predictable and stable relations with Moscow.
“But if Russia continues its reckless or aggressive actions, we will respond, and we will respond decisively,” Blinken said. He also said that the United States is ready to start negotiations on security with Russia almost immediately after the New Year, contacts are planned within the framework of NATO and the OSCE.
Earlier, the US Secretary of State said that Washington was preparing countermeasures in response to a Russian invasion of Ukraine. He noted that US President Joe Biden “clearly told” his Russian counterpart Vladimir Putin and Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov that America “is considering and ready to take various steps that it previously refrained from.”
