The US Charge d’affaires in Ukraine, Kristina Queen, named the purpose of possible Washington sanctions against Russia, saying that they should be introduced only in case of escalation of the conflict around Ukraine. She stated this on the air of the program “Freedom of Speech of Savik Shuster” on YouTube.

According to her, if pre-emptive sanctions are imposed, it will “cause pain”, but it will be less of a deterrent from escalation. “In our opinion, sanctions, a very tough package of sanctions that we have collected in the United States, combined with sanctions that Europe is working on, should be deterrence,” Queen said, adding that they should not be imposed until Russia resorts to actions that the United States is trying to contain.

At the same time, Queen expressed hope that Russia will make mistakes that will help her understand that “aggressive actions will be a mistake.”

On February 1, it became known that the Senate of the US Congress may agree on sanctions against Russia this week. It was noted that the legislators have not yet come to a consensus on whether restrictive measures should be introduced in a preventive manner.
