DARPA did not say which aircraft won the race.
The US military conducted the first human-to-human air battle pilot and fighter controlled by artificial intelligence.
Sky News writes about this.
The fight took place in California during a training exercise over Edwards Air Force Base. With speeds of up to 1,200 mph, the two jets practiced both defensive and offensive scenarios, as well as combat within visual range. The tests took place last September but were only announced this week.
One of the planes was manned and the other was a modified version of the F-16 called the X-62A , or VISTA (Variable Flight Simulator Test Aircraft).
According to the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA), which conducted the test, the AI algorithm relies on historical data to make decisions about current and future in-flight situations.
In 2020, so-called artificial intelligence agents defeated human pilots in all five simulator matches, but the technology had to be tested for real – in the air.
The pilots were on board the X-62A in case of emergency, but did not change controls.
The agency did not say which aircraft won the race.
“The result represents a turning point in aerospace history,” DARPA said in a statement.
Recall that earlier the Air Force told how Western F-16 fighters will affect the course of the war in Ukraine.
By the way, Dutch Defense Minister Kaisa Ollongren reported that her country plans to transfer 24 F-16 fighters to Ukraine.
