The American magazine Foreign Policy has compiled a list of “powder kegs” around the world, where military conflict could break out in 2022. According to observers, such points will be Ethiopia, Iran, Taiwan and Ukraine.

In Ethiopia, according to the authors of the article, armed clashes may begin between the government and the forces of the Popular Front for the Liberation of Tigray, and radical Islamist movements may also provoke a possible war.

In Taiwan's South China Sea region, the risk of conflict between the United States and China is high as tensions between the powers grow. A chance incident between the warplanes of these powers could be a starting point. As an example, the columnists cite the situation with the collision of aircraft in 2001, when significant forces of diplomacy were needed to resolve the incident. They note that in the current situation it will be much more difficult to resolve such a situation.

In Iran, fears are caused by the failure of negotiations on a nuclear program between Washington and Tehran. The country will continue to enrich uranium to create a serious weapon of mass destruction, so the United States and Israel will have to launch airstrikes to weaken nuclear capabilities, the magazine's columnists believe.

Ukraine is included in the list of “powder kegs” due to NATO's expansion into Eastern Europe and statements about an allegedly impending Russian invasion and continued escalation on the Ukrainian border.

Earlier, Salih Yilmaz, a professor at Yildirim Beyazit University in Ankara, pointed out the disinterest of the United States in the world in Ukraine. The political scientist explained that the hot conflict in Ukraine, albeit limited in scale, could become an important trump card for the United States in its confrontation with Russia.
