The United States announced the lowest point in relations with Russia since the end of the Cold War. This opinion was expressed by the candidate for the post of US Deputy Secretary of Defense for Political Affairs Colin Cole, quoted by TASS.

Kohl spoke about the relationship between Washington and Moscow in written responses to questions from lawmakers for the hearings in the US Senate Armed Services Committee on the consideration of his candidacy.

“Relations between the United States and Russia are likely to have reached their lowest point since the end of the Cold War,” he wrote, adding that unless Russia changes its behavior in line with Washington's views, the relationship “will continue to deteriorate.”

Kohl stressed that the interests of Moscow and Washington can overlap in several main areas. Among them, he attributed ensuring strategic stability and minimizing the risk of “unintentional escalation in all spheres”, which could lead to military operations using conventional and nuclear weapons.

Earlier, the United States and Britain were going to impose sanctions against Russia in the framework of the so-called Magnitsky act “for the use of chemical weapons.” Washington and London are discussing the introduction of new measures against Moscow, which may include “Russian oligarchs”. It also clarifies that the administration of US President Joe Biden may take “extreme steps” and impose sanctions against the Russian national debt.
