Anthony Blinken

US Secretary of State Anthony Blinken, during a meeting with his German counterpart Heiko Maas, announced Washington's objections to the Nord Stream 2 gas pipeline. His words are quoted by RIA Novosti.

The State Department explained that Blinken stressed the US commitment to working with allies and partners to counter Russia's attempts to “undermine collective security” and noted that the US opposed the pipeline.

Earlier, Blinken called for a halt to the construction of the Nord Stream 2 gas pipeline, as it is a “bad idea.” He also added that the construction of the gas pipeline contradicts the energy goals of the European Union and undermines the security of Ukraine and other NATO and EU partners.

On March 18, Bloomberg, citing sources, reported that the US administration was planning to introduce additional sanctions against the Nord Stream 2 gas pipeline. Restrictions may be imposed on the Swiss pipeline operator Nord Stream AG. In addition, an insurance company that works with pipe-laying vessels and “other companies providing support vessels and materials for the project” were also under attack. At the same time, Germany told the United States that it rejects sanctions in connection with the construction.
