The United States announced its readiness to strengthen the eastern flank of NATO because of the threat of an escalation of the conflict on the Russian-Ukrainian border. This was stated by National Security Adviser to the President of the United States Jake Sullivan at a briefing for journalists, which was broadcast on the official Twitter account of the White House.

“We will continue to coordinate with allies on the response and economic consequences for Russia in the event of an invasion of Ukraine. We will continue to work with NATO partners to reposition forces and capabilities, especially on NATO's eastern flank, should such a scenario materialize,” Sullivan said.

According to him, Washington is ready to continue to pursue a diplomatic line to maintain stability in the Euro-Atlantic region. The national security adviser noted that the United States is ready to look for ways to achieve progress at the negotiating table, especially on issues that are of interest to the United States, Europe and Russia. However, according to him, the White House is also ready in case “other ways of action” are chosen in Moscow.

“We are ready to take the necessary steps to protect our allies and to respond decisively to any possible aggression that may occur. In our opinion, diplomacy is a more reasonable way. The Russian side needs to assess its next steps in the diplomatic process, and we will continue to engage with both allies and Russians. In the coming days, we will make a decision on what it can be, ”Sullivan said.
