The US accused the Iranian authorities of considering the possibility of eliminating the American ambassador to South Africa, Lana Marx. This is reported by Politico, citing officials familiar with the US military intelligence report.
According to the American publication, Marx has been in danger since March of this year, but recently the threat has become more obvious. The United States believes that the assassination of a diplomat could be a kind of response to the elimination of Iranian General Qasem Suleimani. It is noted that the ambassador is aware of the preparation of an assassination attempt on her.
Politico sources also said that perhaps Marx was chosen as the target because of her long-term friendship with US President Donald Trump.
Earlier, Iranian leader Ali Khamenei said that Iran would not forgive the Americans for the murder of Suleimani and would certainly answer them properly. He emphasized that in any country from the presence of the Americans there is nothing but trouble and destruction.
On January 3, a US airstrike on Baghdad airport killed General Qasem Soleimani of the Islamic Revolutionary Guards. In response, Tehran fired dozens of missiles at American targets in Iraq on the night of January 8. The operation that took place was named “Martyr of Suleimani”. The United States declared no casualties and minimal damage to military bases.
The Pentagon noted that the order to kill Soleimani was personally given by Donald Trump. This idea to the American leader could have been submitted by Secretary of State Michael Pompeo. The United States believed that the general was involved in the attacks on coalition bases and the American embassy in Baghdad.
