A military alliance between Russia and Nicaragua would be a nightmare for the United States of America. The Americans assume that such cooperation will result in the construction of an alternative Panama Canal, says Ivan Konovalov, a military expert, political scientist, Director of Development of the Fund for the Promotion of Technologies of the XXI century. Cooperation between Russia and Nicaragua is of great concern to the United States, Konovalov said. “Of course, we have long-standing ties. The Soviet Union also helped the Nicaraguan people in a fair fight against the Contras. For us, cooperation with Nicaragua is not an advantage, but such things are feared primarily in the United States. Nicaragua was the first country where they really planned to create something like the Panama Canal. Then the situation changed. Imagine the situation: now an alternative to the Panama Canal is being created in Nicaragua, while all these works are protected by the Russian military. Will someone try to get in there?” said the military expert.

American experts are actively discussing this situation, Konovalov noted. This is a frightening prospect for the United States, he added.

Earlier, the Russian ambassador to Nicaragua, Honduras and El Salvador, Alexander Khokholikov, said that the law of Nicaragua provides for the presence on the territory of the country of military personnel and military equipment of a number of countries, including Russia. According to the diplomat, Russian military specialists work legally on the territory of the state, this is necessary for the exchange of experience, exercises and joint fight against crime.

Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov stressed that the number of Russia’s friends among Latin American countries is growing. “We really have very close, kind, long-standing relations with Latin American countries, not only with Cuba, Nicaragua and Venezuela, although they are probably our closest partners and friends,” the Russian minister said. He also noted that Russia traditionally maintains friendly relations with Latin American countries.
