UN Secretary General António Guterres expressed concern over worsening hunger and unfavorable outlook for the food situation in the world in 2021. He wrote about it on his Twitter page.
“Hunger is a gross violation of human rights, given that there is an abundance (of resources) in the world. With 130 million people at risk of starvation by the end of 2020, the World Food Program (WFP) continues to play a vital role as a provider of food and nutrition and hope, ”Guterres wrote.
Earlier in November, it was reported that more than ten countries in Africa and the Middle East were on the verge of mass starvation. Bloomberg reported this with reference to UN data. Conflict, economic hardship, extreme weather and the coronavirus pandemic have limited access to food for hundreds of thousands of people.
In October, about 1.5 million New Yorkers were left without the ability to buy all the necessary food due to the coronavirus pandemic. The New York Times newspaper published a report on how New Yorkers live without sources of income.
