Carlos Ghosn

The Working Group on Arbitrary Detentions of the Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights has ruled that the detention of former Nissan head Carlos Ghosn in Japan, from where he managed to escape, was illegal. This is stated on the site of the unit.

“The authorities were unable to establish the legal basis for the detention of Ghosn. The deprivation of his liberty was unjustified, ”the release said. The UN called the repeated detentions of the top manager contrary to the court and the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, and also demanded that Japan pay compensation under international law.

Ghosn was arrested in Japan in November 2018. He was accused of concealing $ 80 million in income and non-payment of taxes on this amount, as well as of allegedly covering losses from personal investments at the expense of Nissan. According to the prosecutor's office, for 70 days of Ghosn's imprisonment, his interrogations took place every day, including weekends and holidays, sometimes for 11 hours. At the end of December 2019, the former manager fled Japan, hiding in a box that was sent through Turkey to Lebanon. Ghosn holds citizenship of this country, as well as of France and Brazil.
