Zerkalo.io will be available in Belarus via VPN. Outside the country, the resource opens without additional settings. “When there are fewer independent media outlets in Belarus, it’s time to launch new ones,” the editorial office is sure.
Tut.by editorial office
The team of the Belarusian portal Tut.by announced the launch of a new media – Zerkalo.io. The editorial's appeal was posted on Thursday, July 8, on the newspaper's website.
“An hour before our launch, it became known” that the site of “Nasha Niva” was blocked, “searches are underway in the editorial office and at the homes of our colleagues,” the creators of the new media recalled. “We express our support for independent media in Belarus and demand that the pressure on them be stopped,” they stressed.
The team explained why until they return under the old brand
“When there are fewer independent media outlets in Belarus, it’s time to launch new ones,” the editorial office is sure. They explained why they decided not to return under the old brand yet. This is due to the fact that in early June the Ministry of Internal Affairs of Belarus applied to a court in Minsk with a request to recognize Tut.by as extremist. The editorial team would like to ensure that if this happens, readers will not be deprived of access to “objective information”.
Zerkalo.io will not be a copy of Tut.by
Zerkalo.io will not be a complete copy of Tut.by. With the resources available, the team will be able to cover only the most important topics, with an emphasis on social, politics, economics and analytics. In addition, journalists are adopting social networks that were previously run by the Tut.by portal.
In Belarus, access to Zerkalo.io will be possible through a VPN. Outside the country, the resource opens without additional settings and services.
In the appeal, the editors concluded that Zerkalo.io will end its existence on the day when Tut.by “will be able to legally resume its full-fledged work in Belarus with the entire archive of publications.” “When this will happen, we do not know,” added the reporters.
Tut.by case
On May 18, employees of the Financial Investigation Department came to the offices of the editorial office of Tut.by and the registrar of domain zones Hoster.by, as well as to the home of a number of journalists. A criminal case was initiated against the “officials” of TUT BY MEDIA on charges of evading “the payment of taxes and fees on an especially large scale.” 15 people were detained in the case. Since then, the editorial staff of the Belarusian edition has been working in a truncated composition, all participants in the work process are abroad.
In early June, the Ministry of Internal Affairs of Belarus applied to a court in Minsk with a request to declare the publication extremist. The editorial staff of Tut.by responded by saying that such actions were “an attempt to erase the history of the country, which was written by journalists for 20 years” and “to declare it illegal for discussion and dissemination” everything they said and wrote.
A number of European politicians harshly criticized the actions of the Belarusian authorities. Thus, members of the European Parliament issued a statement in which they “strongly condemned the unrelenting repression by the regime” of the ruling in Belarus Alexander Lukashenko against the independent media.
