The crack in the International Space Station (ISS), which caused the air leak, is 2 cm to 4 cm long. This was told by RIA Novosti with reference to a source in the space field.
The crew repaired the leak by temporarily sealing the hole with heat-resistant tape – Kapton tape.
Now ground specialists are deciding how to permanently seal the hole.
As Rambler wrote, a small air leak on the ISS was first recorded in September 2019 (270 grams of air per day). Over the past few months, air has begun to leave the ISS five times faster than before. In August 2020, the rate of leakage increased to 540 grams per day. In September 2020, the leakage rate increased to 1.4 kilograms per day.
Last week, astronauts discovered the place of an air leak with a tea bag: they left it in zero gravity, after which they began to wait for which direction it would start to be blown away. The tea leaves accumulated along the scratch and indicated a place in the intermediate chamber of the module in the area of the broadband communication system equipment. The MCC advised the cosmonauts to glue the air leakage with tape and foam rubber.
