According to archaeologists, the building was destroyed by the soldiers of the Roman Caesar Flavius Constantine Gallus during the brutal suppression of the Jewish uprising of 351-354 AD.
During excavations in the Israeli city of Lod, which was founded in the 15th century BC and still exists, archaeologists found treasure from the last Jewish uprising against the Romans. The coins were hidden in the foundations of a destroyed building from the late Roman or early Byzantine period. The cache miraculously survived unharmed.
This was reported by the Israel Antiquities Authority (IAA).
According to archaeologists, the building was destroyed by Roman soldiers during the brutal suppression of the Jewish uprising, but the foundation survived. It was probably the rebels who hid 94 silver and bronze coins there, dating from 221-354 AD, so that they could return for it when everything calmed down.
“It was destroyed to its very foundations the building is clear evidence that the rebellion was forcibly suppressed using violence and cruelty. It is known from the Talmudic writings that Lod was the most important Jewish center after the destruction of the Second Temple in Jerusalem,” said IAA archaeologist Shachar Crispin.
He added that very little written evidence has survived to this day about this uprising, which was suppressed by the troops of the Roman Caesar Flavius Constantine Gallus. But from these rare texts it is known that the Romans destroyed large Jewish communities – Lod, Zipori and Tiberias.
In addition to coins, stone and marble artifacts with inscriptions in Greek were discovered in the ruins, Hebrew and Latin languages.
According to excavation participants Shachar Crispin and Mor Wiesel, the elders of the city could have lived in this Jewish building.
Professor Joshua Schwartz, Chairman of the IAA Council, noted that it is impossible to determine with certainty whether this remarkable house served as a synagogue, a training hall, an elders' meeting hall, or all these functions simultaneously.
We would like to remind you that important construction was suspended in Greece due to a unique archaeological find. During the construction of a new airport on the Greek island of Crete, an amazing ancient labyrinth was discovered.
