The White House listed the main topics that were raised during the online talks between the presidents of Russia and the United States, Vladimir Putin and Joe Biden. This is stated in a statement on the website of the American administration.
Washington indicated that Biden had voiced the concern of the United States and European allies with a build-up of Russian forces near the borders of Ukraine. The American leader made it clear that they would respond with decisive economic and other measures in the event of a military escalation. Also, the head of the White House called on his Russian counterpart to de-escalate around Ukraine and return to diplomacy. In particular, the presidents instructed their teams to continue the dialogue on Ukraine.
In addition, the summit raised the topics of strategic stability and cybersecurity. Another area of the conversation was “regional topics, for example Iran”, noted in Washington.
The meeting took place via a special video link. The Kremlin said that this line was created during the previous administrations, but today it is being used for the first time. The first footage of the politicians' communication was shown to the journalists, but then the meeting was held in a closed format.
The Russian leader contacted the American president from his residence in Sochi. Putin arrived there from New Delhi, where he was on a visit. The presidents' current contact is the fifth since Biden took office.
