The company ByteDance, which owns the social network TikTok, has decided to remove mandatory overtime work on weekends. Now the employees of the Chinese IT giant work according to the scheme of “big and small weeks”. With this schedule, staff are required to work overtime every second Sunday. Overtime pay is generous, so many workers were unhappy with the company's decision.
A change in the work schedule of ByteDance employees could cut their wages by 20%, TechNode reported. Under Chinese law, overtime is doubled, so canceling Sunday shifts would drastically reduce workers' income.
In June, ByteDance conducted an employee survey. About 30% said they would prefer to work on a “big and small week” scheme. In early July, the closest competitor ByteDance, the owner of the Kwai Kuaishou mobile app, canceled the mandatory work. Employees of both companies admit that the abandonment of the previous scheme was caused not by a sense of concern for the staff, but by the desire to save on salaries.
Overtime kills hundreds of thousands of people around the world every year, according to the World Health Organization (WHO).
The processing problem is also acute in Russia. A group of deputies from the LDPR faction proposed to set a limit on the number of hours of processing with irregular working days. A July poll showed that one in three Russians does not get paid for overtime work.
