The threat of extinction is receding: the population of one of the rarest cats in the world has been restored

The Iberian lynx population has been restored through a number of efforts, including the restoration of its hunting grounds.

International Union for Conservation Nature Conservation (IUCN) has announced that the Iberian lynx, considered one of the rarest cats in the world, is no longer at risk of extinction.

BBC writes about this.

Until recently, the Iberian lynx was on the “red list” of animals close to extinction. Now, according to the IUCN classification, the animal has been moved to the “vulnerable” list.

The IUCN, which classifies species of animals, fungi and plants according to their level of distribution in nature, noted that in 2001 there were only 62 adult Iberian lynxes in the world. But over the past two decades, the population of these cats has increased significantly and now amounts to more than 2,000 individuals, including young animals.

These animals live in the Iberian region, a part of the Iberian Peninsula that belongs to Spain and Portugal. According to the latest data, there are already 14 habitats of the Iberian lynx, where populations are stably reproducing. One of them is located in Portugal, and all the rest are in Spain.

Conservationists noted that the increase in the number of wild European rabbits, which these cats hunt, helped restore the Iberian lynx population. This species of rabbit was also previously on the verge of extinction.

In addition, forest restoration and international programs to return lynx from captivity to the wild have played an important role.

Recall that climatologist from Japan Kunio Kaiho created a new graph demonstrating the mass extinction of species. He also talked about when the next end of the world might come. He also emphasized that the next extinction on our planet will be the sixth.
