The threat from Russia will grow: the President of Estonia made an important proposal to NATO allies

The North Atlantic Alliance must increase defense spending.

Russia will be more dangerous than before in the next decade, so allies NATO should consider increasing its defense spending to three percent of gross domestic product (GDP) instead of two.

Estonian President Alar Karis stated this, ERR reports.

According to him, it is obvious that Russia will remain the most serious military threat to NATO for a very long time.

“In the next decade, Russia will be more hostile than NATO must be ready for this earlier. For this, NATO has good collective defense plans, which must be filled with the necessary forces and weapons systems,” said the Estonian leader.

Alar Karis added that the Alliance needs to increase defense spending as it becomes increasingly clear that two percent of each ally's gross domestic product (GDP) may not be enough.

“We need to discuss raising ambitious defense spending to 2.5 or three percent,” he said.

Recall Estonia's initiative to increase defense spending is supported by countries on NATO's eastern flank, which share borders with Russia. The Allies believe that it is necessary to more actively prepare for a possible attack by the aggressor country in the future.
