Moscow. September 15th. INTERFAX.RU – The Vector Center has developed a test system for detecting the Nipah virus, an outbreak of which was recorded in India, said Anna Popova, head of Rospotrebnadzor of the Russian Federation.

“The test system for the Nipah virus is already in the Russian Federation,” Popova said at a meeting with students of the Rostov State Medical University.

She noted that the test system was developed at the Vector Center of Rospotrebnadzor.

The Nipah virus was detected in the Indian state of Kerala in early September. It can cause severe fever, convulsions and vomiting, and there is no vaccine or cure for it. The only treatment for infection with this virus is supportive care. According to the WHO, the lethality of the Nipah virus ranges from 40% to 75%.

The virus was first identified in the late 1990s in Malaysia and is transmitted to humans through contact with bats or pigs, and from person to person.
