Pavel Krasheninnikov, Chairman of the State Duma Committee on State Construction and Legislation, Co-Chairman of the Russian Lawyers' Association, assessed the possibility of depriving a Russian of the citizenship he received by birthright. His words are quoted by TASS.
“If a person was born a citizen, then it is impossible to take away citizenship. In accordance with the constitution, it is impossible to deprive citizenship, ”the deputy stressed.
At the end of December, parliamentarian Alexander Khinshtein made a proposal to add grounds for depriving Russian citizenship. In his opinion, oppositionists who speak negatively about Russia and their people should also be deprived of citizenship.
On December 29, Russian President Vladimir Putin submitted to the State Duma a bill that provides for the introduction of the institution of termination of Russian citizenship. The explanatory note notes that the procedure for terminating citizenship is being introduced instead of the current procedure for canceling decisions on the issuance of a Russian passport. In addition, the bill provides for the creation of a unified mechanism for voluntary renunciation of citizenship and transfers the authority to the Ministry of Internal Affairs to consider relevant decisions.
