The indictment is the first time that the child of a sitting president has been brought to criminal charges.
The son of US President Joe Biden was accused of three counts of lying when purchasing firearms. If convicted, Hunter Biden faces a maximum sentence of 25 years in prison, the Justice Department said in a statement.

Hunter Biden was charged after attempts to reach a plea agreement with prosecutors failed. This is the first time that the son or daughter of a sitting US president has been formally charged.
All three charges relate to Mr. Biden allegedly providing false information on forms to purchase firearms while he was a drug user .
In particular, documents provided to the court show that the son of the current president purchased a Colt revolver from a Delaware gun store in October 2018. He kept the gun for 11 days.
At the time of purchasing the gun, Hunter Biden was actively using crack. Under US federal law, it is a crime to provide false information on such documentation or to possess a firearm while using drugs.
He previously admitted these charges during plea negotiations with prosecutors.
Legal Hunter Biden's problems have become a serious political issue due to the attention of Republicans and could have a big impact on the 2024 elections, in which his father will be the Democratic presidential candidate.
